By: Charlie Sternberg
The leaders of today’s largest pharmaceutical companies come from diverse backgrounds spanning science, medicine, finance, diagnostics, operations and commercial leadership. Yet their priorities are strikingly similar: investing in oncology, obesity and metabolic disease, neuroscience, rare diseases, advanced biologics and next-generation therapeutic platforms. For CDMOs, the strategic decisions made by these executives will continue to shape outsourcing trends, manufacturing investments, supply-chain strategies and partnership opportunities throughout the global pharmaceutical industry.
The following is an overview of the careers, tenures and major accomplishments of the CEOs of the top 10 global pharma and biopharma companies from Lilly to Novo Nordisk.
Chair and CEO, Eli Lilly and Company
CEO since: 2017
Why He Matters
Since becoming CEO in 2017, David A. Ricks has transformed Eli Lilly and Company into one of the pharmaceutical industry’s most successful growth stories. His tenure has been defined by breakthrough obesity and diabetes therapies, significant pipeline expansion and some of the largest manufacturing investments in the sector.
Career Path
Ricks joined Lilly in 1996 as a business development associate and advanced through leadership positions in sales, marketing, business development and international operations. He led Lilly’s businesses in Canada and China, served as president of Lilly USA, and later headed Lilly Bio-Medicines before becoming CEO in January 2017 and chairman later that year.
